Sartorious 3D Printing Field Trip

The FTC club visited a local company, Sartorious, on June 17, 2019, to learn about 3D printing and engineering notebooks. The company uses 3D printing technology to produce specialized products used in the biopharmaceutical industry. This technology allows for the manufacture of very complex items that can not be created by traditional casting. The students learned how 3D “blueprints” are created using computer aided design (CAD) software and then uploaded to the 3D printer.

The FTC team hopes to utilize similar technology to create customized parts for their robot. They also hope to document their robot using CAD and keep careful records in their engineering notebook. These skills are used in all science and technology fields and are extremely important for “re-creating” one’s ideas, proving original ideas and re-telling the story of the teams’ journey.
